STARSTORM
Star Storm
Sunday 10 Sept 2017
Ars Electronica Festival 2017
Linz, Austria
At seven o'clock in the evening fifty guests were transported by bus from the main festival site at Post City to the BVS building, a fire materials research and testing facility. On arrival they entered a dark warehouse space and received safety instructions and safety equipment including goggles, breathing mask and ear plugs. They were then asked to sit and then the feint light that was illuminating the corners of the space went out. Waiting in the dark until the first load explosion made them jump. Presented in the style of promenade theatre, the journey continued weaving together ten site specific explosive pyrotechnic events across three distinct spaces. Each section of the performance is varied and distinct, crating a wonderful contrast of energy and experience from exciting to meditative, from durational to instant, from order to chaos, reflecting the universe we live in and the discoveries we have made about it. Designed to be an emotional as well as physical journey Star Storm created a unique, powerful, lasting and beautifully poetic experience experience which will gave audiences insights into the very nature of our cosmos and their own place within it. Star Storm was designed using research undertaken during Aoife's artist residency at the European Space Agency about the composition, life cycle, magnetic behaviour and light production within stars, including our Sun.
"Welcome to Star Storm,
There are a few things you should know if order to prepare yourself for the performance:
This is not a firework event.
Leave your preconceptions about explosions behind.
Time is relative
Take yours.
Slow down.
Be aware of the space, the pace the temperature, the air movement, the oxygen, the silences as well as the sounds, your body's reaction, your thoughts and distractions.
This is not an education, it is an experience.
There will be no verbal explanation.
You will find your way.
Practical:
You will move around – please follow when directed.
Some of the events will be better experienced sitting on the floor.
The location is a warehouse and you will spend a little time outside it will be wise to wear comfortable shoes and something warm.
After the event you will have the opportunity to gather and talk to the artist before returning to Post City."
