SECOND STORY
Working with explosives over the past ten
years I found the innate reaction humans have to the idea or evidence
of an explosion brings forth strong emotions relating to politics,
love, history and humour. As a foreign artist working in Berlin for
the first time I utilised this phenomena by inviting the public to
give me items to explode along with a reason. So I began to build an
intimate insight of Berliners culture and beliefs. One that they gave to me.
The first stage of the project involved the submission of words and images by the public or any institute or establishment.
The only requirements were:
1. It is in some sort of printed format on paper or card. Or that it is soft. No metal, wood or plastic.
2. It has an emotional/powerful relevance for the persons/institute/etc. submitting the item.
The reason for submitting the piece could be obvious or private. It was entirely up to each individual.
In the second stage of the project these items were blasted in an appropriate way. Taking care with each one to try to create a physical representation that would best represent the emotional one for which it was submitted.
The final stage was to display the work for the duration of the exhibition, where those who submitted pieces were reunited with these already personally powerful texts and images, in their new form.
All works have or will be returned to the original owner after the exhibition to allow the relationship between them and the object/image/text in question, to continue.
